- Marie Van Britten invented the first closed-circuit security system, now used for home security and surveillance.
- As an agricultural chemist, George Washington Carver invented peanut butter and created 518 new products from crops including ink, dye, soap, cosmetics, flour, vinegar and synthetic rubber.
- Granville T. Woods accumulated nearly 60 patents during his lifetime (1856-1910) many of which improved the functioning of railroads. His most notable are the induction telegraph system, which allowed traveling trains to communicate with one another while also allowing dispatchers to locate them, and the first electricity powered railway.
- Garret Morgan aka the "Black Edison" invented an early version of a gas mask called a smoke hood, and created the first traffic light that included the yellow light which is standard today.
- Percy Lavon Julian, made various vital contributions to modern medicine as a result of experimenting with soybeans. He synthesized a drug called physostigmine, which is used to treat glaucoma.
- Charles Richard Drew, Dubbed the "Father of the Blood Bank" pioneered the development of long-term preservation of blood plasma. He also streamlined the country's blood banks, saving countless of lives during World War II.

- Patricia Bath - In 1986, Bath, an ophthalmologist and laser scientist, invented laserphaco—a device and technique used to remove cataracts and revive patients' eyesight. It is now used internationally.
- Mark E. Dean is an American inventor and computer engineer, co-inventor of IBM’s personal computer released in 1981. He developed the technology that enables printers, keyboards, and mice to communicate with your computer which revolutionized how we all interact with the internet!
- Lonnie Johnson, the engineer , developed the mega water gun (known as the Super Soaker) in his free time while working at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
- An enslaved African of 1716 named Onesimus developed an old method of conferring immunity to those infected with smallpox in Boston, Massachusetts. Of the 242 people he “variolated”, only 1 in 40 people died as opposed to 1 in 7!
